Golf Specific Training
Paul Chek, the
Founder of the C.H.E.K. Institute and creator of the Golf
Biomechanics training program, sums it up best when in a golf
training video he said;
"Few conditioning
programs address the five ball flight control factors. Yet,
four of the five: club face alignment, swing path, angle of
attack, and hitting the sweet spot, are all under the direct
control of flexibility (muscle balance), and static and dynamic
stability in the body. Only the fifth one, club head speed is
governed by strength and power.
If you want to align
the club face, follow the right swing path, have the right angle
of attack at impact and hit the sweet spot on the club
regularly, consistently and have a lower score, than you need to
have muscle balance & flexibility and you better have static and
dynamic stability. If you don't, you'll be inconsistent. Few
training programs address these critical components of your
game."
Today we don't have to hunt and gather our
food in the primitive sense, but your body is designed to do
just that. In the wild, if you couldn't bend, lunge, squat,
push, pull and twist, you didn't survive. While we don't
have to hunt for food in the wild, golf requires you to be able
to functionally twist, bend, lunge and squat!
Unfortunately because the seated workplace is now the number one
work environment in the world, many people have lost the ability
to move through these basic motions.
The simple fact is that if you want to
improve your golf game, you've got to improve your body's
flexibility and balance first. These two factors alone are
critical to consistent shot making. If you want to do
that, you're in the right place.
Let's look at those five ball flight
control factors again. These are the five things that
directly govern how your ball will travel off the face of your club.
- Club face alignment
- Swing path
- Angle of attack at impact
- Sweet spot on the club face
- Club head speed
What do most people do when they
go
into the gym to work from a book on training for goal or hirer a
personal trainer? They head right to the weights,
usually machines, and focus on increasing strength using body builder type exercises.
Even many personal trainers plop clients on these dysfunction
creating machines thinking it
will improve power and distance. Unfortunately this isn't
the way and often lead to injury through overuse of the hands
and wrists. These just happen to be the most common golf related
injuries.
Dynamic Sports
golf specific
training
program puts everyone through a comprehensive assessment and
then prioritizes their training to maximize the time and effort
spent. The benefits to your golf game as well as your
general health are huge!
- First a muscle length/tension assessment
determines which muscles are tight and restricting joint
rotation. Typically these are the source of faults in
your golf swing.
- Corrective stretching is performed to restore
muscle balance and range of motion to your body. When
your body's muscles are more balanced, we'll switch to customized
maintenance stretches to keep is that way.
- You will learn dynamic stretches and
muscle mobilizations that will prepare your body to play a
better round of golf. These will wake up and
warm up the key systems of your body required to swing the
golf club with consistency, leading to what will
start lowering your score right away: consistent
shots.
- Your actual training will include static and dynamic stability
exercises. During your golf swing, some parts of your body
are moving and some are not. Teaching your body to
stabilize part while moving a different part will bring you the balance and
coordination you need before you'll ever benefit from increased strength and power.
- Once you're body is balanced
and you can stabilize it while moving, you will make much
better gains from strength and power
training. The routines you will learn are sport specific for golf
designed to give you the
ability to increase your distance, sometimes substantially.
The strength and power you gain in this phase will be useable
because it will be built by integrating your muscles
together, not isolating them.
The beauty of this program is that most
if not all the routines can be performed in your own home, gym
or even when traveling. You will be using training methods
specifically designed to improve your golf game, not make you
look like Mr. or Mrs. Olympia. If you follow this program
you will improve how your body functions on and off the golf
course.
